    Hey Jon,
Your flex could not directly connect to the database, you need help of other languages/script to connect this. Coldfusion is the best one to use with flex and it has strong support over flex.

You need to follow certain steps to connect to your mysql database. Also as you mention your database in on Linuxbox, then there is very less chances of having coldfusion on it.

You can go ahead with PHP. You have to write a small script which can in php to retrive value from database.

On flex end you can use httpservice to connect to your php script. Httpservice has certain methods which can talk with your script via POST OR GET.

If possible I will forward you the sample code which can bring values from database to your flex application.

    Wish you merry christmas
